The first impression didn't get me hooked. There were lots of detailed descriptions of the scenery and long explanations of what Emily was thinking but barely anything happened. I thought the repeated mentions of Emily freaking out about the connection of the church to her parents was redundant. Also none of the chapters ended with cliff hangers so it didn't propel me to read on.
The one thing that I am slightly interested in is related to Emily's parents' death. It happened over 10 years ago and she still can't talk about it or even think about going to the cemetery. I suspect some drama to be connected with their death or some events leading up to it because Emily is refusing counseling and she is still physically anxious thinking about her parents. If something that happened a decade ago still elicits strong physical reactions, it must be serious or awful. I am curious to find out more about it but I hope the rest of the story moves faster and reveals more than the beginning did.
