I have to start off by saying; Sabaa is an incredible writer - even amidst a long day at work I still managed to fly through this. I can’t deny that her writing emits some intense emotions which got a few tears out of me in the end.
I found this book incredibly frustrating for the most part. I think I’m just tired of reading books where brown kids suffer and maybe I wanted more for Sal and Noor besides the 2 pages of happiness we got towards the end. This book was definitely meant to be as realistic as possible but it felt like every bad thing that could happen to these characters did. Which reminded me a lot of Girls Burn Brighter by Shobha Rao - another book filled with unnecessary amounts of suffering with zero end results. I’m glad there seemed to be a point and silver lining at the end for these characters which was why I gave it a higher rating.
All my comments aside I loved reading Misbah’s chapters the most. She was the character I wanted to know more about from the very first page and she was a part of the story as much as our main characters.
