Hope.

Sabaa Tahir excells at writing hope like no other author I have ever read, and I will read everything she writes if for no other reason than to remember that hope exists. She does not shy away from hard topics, choosing instead to shine a light on things that are wrong with the world and how they should be different. Despite writing about topics as terrible and distressing as child abuse and sexual abuse, despite focusing on the horrible injustice of racial and ethnical prejudices, despite dismal circumstances where nothing seems to go right, there is always, always hope. It's woven through her writing, integrated into her characters, and I swear it shines straight into my soul.

This book was hard. It was filled with things no human should ever have to go through, decisions no one should ever have to make. It hurt. It made me cry, and fear, and question so many things about the world, but in the end, I am filled with contentment. Yes, it makes me want to fight tooth and nail for what's right and good and just. Yes, I am still filled with horror at all that is wrong with this world. But I am filled with hope as well, and I think that makes her writing all the more beautiful.

As she wrote in a previous book, "As long as there is life, there is hope," and I will forever cling to this quote.
