~ Heart-stopping, Lyrical Contemporary! ~
I just… wow, I don’t quite know where to start with this one.
•
Love is not a word I would use to describe this book. Not because it wasn’t an absolutely masterful piece of work or because I didn’t thoroughly enjoy reading it, but I feel rather weird using love to describe a story about people’s intense grief, trauma, and struggle.
•
The writing was absolutely beautiful and easy to read and I just could not put this book down! I stayed up super late the night I started it just to read the next page, the next paragraph, the next word. I loved the ember in the ashes series, and Sabaa definitely proved that she can write contemporary just as easily!!
•
Noor, Salahudin, and Misbah’s journeys were each soul-crushing, powerful, and beautiful in their own ways and the way they intertwined, broke apart, and crashed back together again was amazing to see!
•
Truly this was an amazing read and even thought it physically pained me to read parts of this, I’m incredibly glad I did and that I got to read it early… I absolutely, 100% recommend this if you are in a mental state to be able to handle this! Masterful job Sabaa!! I will forever read anything you write!
•
***Thanks to bookish first and Penguin Random House for providing me with an early finished copy to read and review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.***
•
CWs - frequent strong language, drug, alcohol, and substance abuse, mentions of sexual assault, physical and verbal abuse, Islamophobia, and a negative / intense exchange with law enforcement
