Contemporary isn’t normally a genre I enjoy. They all seem to be basic and unoriginal to me, but I saw how many people love this author and I had to give her a try. I can confidently say she is an amazing author and I know why people love her. This is my first book by her and I am a huge fan.

This book follows two high schoolers who are each dealing with many external and internal battles. These struggles in their lives were so real and heartfelt. I didn’t feel like they were exacerbated for a certain effect. The way they reacted was natural and lifelike.

Character development is a strong point for this author. It took a little for me to get into the story but once I did I kept craving to read more. I looked forward to reading more of the story, and kept just saying, ‘one more chapter’. This book would be very easy to binge the whole thing in one sitting. And one major reason for this was the characters. Both were people who you felt for because of the tragedy in their lives. Even when they made bad decisions you couldn’t help but want things to work out for the good.

The plot was also well done. A lot of the chapters ended in a way that made you want to read more. Tragedy and heartache are driving forces in the story and this is probably why I fell so in love with the story. Nothing draws me more than a strong emotional factor.

I will warn you that there are some trigger warnings for this book. But I like the way it was done in this book. So many important topics were included in this book which added to the emotional toll this book will impact on readers.

But what I really apricate is the ending. I hate the fairy tale happily ever after where life is perfect, and everything falls perfectly into place. This is not one of those endings. Nothing is going to be perfect in these twos’ lives, but you can finish the story feeling satisfied nonetheless.
