I cannot imagine going through life being afraid to truly voice who you are. The writing is engaging and will hook readers. I cannot imagine being in Laura's shoes after her dad comes out to her. I'm sure that it was such a hard secret to keep emotionally and to help protect her mother's feelings and identity. I had a hard time grasping the time period that they lived in and that being gay wasn't acceptable, I can't imagine the isolation, fear, and loneliness a person would feel. This would make for a great campus read for diversity and LGBT resource advocates and allies. I will be recommending this book to readers who enjoy reading memoirs and want to learn more about the LGBTQ history/community. It's always good to read about others experiences and history (both the good and bad) so that we can learn and move forward in a positive direction.
