In her memoir, Affliction: Growing up with a closeted gay dad, Laura Hall tells a story that is outside my personal experience, but was still relatable. The writing is good and kept me turning pages, wanting to learn more about her family. The author is a year older than me, so some of the things she talks about were familiar to me, as I, too, grew up in a Catholic family (four kids in 4 1/2 years). The late 60's were interesting to read about as well. Ms. Hall lived much closer to the center of much of what was happening, living near San Francisco, rather than the upper Mid-West, as I did. Her relationship to her dad was interesting, too. Her dad had to make difficult choices. He sounds like a great dad, in spite of the fact that he had to hide so much of who he was, which is sad. By the time he was able to live his life more openly, he was old and in frail health. The cover photo fits the book's theme well.
