While non-fiction is not typically my cup of tea, Affliction by Laura Hall was heartbreaking and at moments jaw dropping. In her memoir, Laura shares what her post WWII life was like growing up with a straight mother and a closeted gay father. There were times in the book where I had to just pause and process some of the things she was sharing- how her mother knew her father was gay yet stayed with him, or how the San Francisco police department entrapped gay men and arrested them. To me this memoir was beautiful yet heartbreaking to see how much two people were willing to sacrifice in order to be a happy family but also in order to stay alive. Laura also shares how her fathers secret became her burden and how her parents relationship influenced her own relationship with men. Overall, I give this book 5 stars because her story is so unique and keeps the reader wanting more!
