In her memoir, Laura Hall shares a poignant, heart warming, moving, and powerful story about her family. The memoir chronicles her father, Ralph Hall, journey through the socio-political and economic changes that shape their journey from the 1930s to the present. As readers, we learn about Ralph’s participation in the war, his relationship with Irene, Laura’s mother, and his stay in San Francisco at the pinnacle of the gay rights movement. Most noticeable is how comfortable her mom was as Ralph participated in the AIDS Buddy Program, though she worried for him.

I finished her memoir in one reading, and as I read - I cried, I laughed, I could relate. Families are complex entities - especially our immediate ones on whom we depend our entire lives. There were moments when I kept on getting reminded of interactions I have had with my own parents. Her memoir, ultimately, is a tribute to them. It speaks volumes about how we often take certain cultural advancements for granted. I remember back in 2015, when same-sex marriages were legalized in the United States. Yet, laws are still precarious in countries like India.

Thank you @laurahallwriter and Bookish first @bookishfirst for giving me the opportunity to read such a poignant memoir. #bookstagramm #laurahall #affliction
