Hall probably eventually gets around to focusing on her father's life choices and how he perceived the world to be unaccepting of who he was, but the start of this book is not really indicative of it. Trying to reflect on childhood, and particular events specifically as an adult is hard to do because to anyone but the author these events seem mundane. This is the struggle I have with the opening to this book, her reflections on moments during her childhood just aren't interesting - and she doesn't connect them well enough to the story she's trying to tell about her father's identity.
