I absolutely loved this book. I’m still processing it and I know this is one that will be sticking with me. I think I really fell in love when one of the two main narrators calls out that the other rich white kids named as prefects are the “main characters” and while he’s right it was refreshing to have a story that centered around protagonists that are not only African American but queer too. While I would like that story to not be a horror film about systemic, blatant, racism bringing those black students down I understand why this was such an important story to tell. Niveus is an excellent private school that is almost completely white. The sole exceptions are two seniors Devon and Chiamaka who despite both being black are complete opposites. Devon has flown under the radar earning A’s and spending all of his time composing music to try to reach his dream of Juilliard. Chiamaka is the queen of the school and has focused on how to gain and maintain her popularity while also excelling in her classes focused on going to Yale and becoming a doctor. Senior year a mysterious person named Aces keeps sending out blasts that seem to be focused on Devon and Chiamaka. This book has a bit of the Get Out vibe, and should definitely be a must by for everyone!
