Fast Paced, Fun, Fantastic Debut
This reading experience was so much fun! I've been really getting into YA thrillers lately, and I appreciate how new voices into this sector has been broadening the genre. For fans of school-based YA thrillers, this is a must read (think, Karen McManus' One of Us is Lying series). The private school vibe changed the dynamic a little and I liked that as well :) This book also touched on some really serious topics that I'm so glad YA is at the forefront of exploring: racism, classism, bullying, and the intersection of all of those in a school environment. Growing up is already tough, but add in those extra elements these specific characters have to contend with: growing up Black, growing up male/female/poor/queer--it brought up those topics so well. The plot moves fast, which is another reason I love YA. Thrillers by themselves already tend to move quickly, and I like seeing how these teenagers/students come up with ingenious ways to investigate these mysteries on the day it came out, cause I inhaled this book :)
