A Tangled Web is a true story about love, lies, and obsession. In 2012, Cari Lea Farver disappeared. Through a text, she said goodbye to her family and friends, relinquished custody of her son, and quit her job. Her mom, knowing Cari better than most, knew this was completely out of character and reported her missing.

Around the same time, Dave Kroupa had reason to believe Cari was stalking him and was quickly growing fearful. His stalker somehow knew his every move. Then Dave’s casual girlfriend, Shanna “Liz” Golyar, began receiving texts and emails, in which she was called offensive names and her life was threatened. The case went unsolved and the stalker remained at large for over three years until a group of dedicated investigators stepped in and finally cracked the perplexing case.

It blows my mind that this is a true crime novel because it’s a story that seems to be taken straight from the pages of fiction. It is outright frightening to think that a person like Liz Golyar existed in the world and got away with her crimes for as long as she did. As I was reading, I couldn’t help but wonder how the police weren’t able to piece together the clues that seemed to lead them straight to the culprit, but I realize that she wove such a convoluted web of deceit and had almost everyone around her fooled.

A Tangled Web is an absolutely compulsive and addicting page-turner. Leslie Rule is a talented writer and storyteller, who masterfully retold the stages of this lengthy, elaborate crime. I’d most certainly recommend this novel to any lover of true crime novels!
