When writers are advised to "jump right in" to their story, de León's work should be the example they give of perfect execution. From literally the first words, I was utterly gripped. de León wastes no unnecessary time on unessential set up or narratives - Yolanda, our protagonist, is on her own journey. We readers are simply grabbing on for a small portion of the ride. Empowering, beautiful, and with hints of critical themes of feminism and race, "A Spy in the Struggle" comes across as a thrilling story that packs a welcome punch.
