This took a little getting into but once the groundwork is laid and the character personas come to light this becomes a fun read. There's also an interesting twist at the end that has me eager to start book two next month. Definitely a cliffhanger. There's a good mixture of sibling rivalry, magic and omens. The world building was captivating and the different tribes, slavery and political issues lend additional and important themes to this one. I did want a little more in character development at first but once the rivalries and action started kicking in I noticed a lot of the depth started coming out during this period. It changed the overall dynamic of the book for me in a good way, with connection and appreciation of what was at stake.

True rating 3.5/5. I'd recommend this one for those looking for something with a slow burn and ending that hooks you.
