A Nearly Normal family is a (translated from Swedish) US debut, legal thriller.
I do love thrillers, but I hadn't read a legal thriller prior to this one. I don't know if it was the translation or just the writing style, but I had a bit of trouble really getting into this book at first. However, once it switched POV in part 2 (of 3) I really got into it.
While this is a slow burner, it has a very intriguing story. I was surprised at how many embellishments and lies were uncovered once another character started to share the same chain of events and memories. I found myself really wanting to know what really happened on the night in question, and needing to know the verdict and to get some finality about the events of that particular night.
It takes some time to get to that "A-ha" moment, but once all the pieces are fit together it's a very strong finish. This isn't your typical twists and turns at every chapter thriller, it's a slow build up with pieces to a big puzzle that finally fit together.
Although the beginning wasn't great for me, the changing of narrations definitely gave the characters more depth, and the build up and the end were great.
