Audiobook for the win! Honestly, this is quite a slow burning story and if I hadn’t listened to it on audio, I may have had difficulty getting into it. I had heard numerous people complain that the fathers section was their least favorite but I think he was my favorite. His character flaws, inner voice and struggles came through a lot clearer for me than any other character. I definitely connected with him the most. I thought the author did an excellent job of showcasing how flawed we are as humans. We are constantly trying to do good but sometimes take the wrong path and its through that journey we become our best selves. By the time I got to the 3rd section (the mothers) I had to pick up the physical copy as I couldn’t wait to find out what happened. While I wasn’t entirely surprised by the ending, I thought it played out quite well.
“We were a perfectly ordinary family, and then everything changed. It takes a long time to build a life, but only an instant for it to crumble. It takes many years-decades, maybe a lifetime-to become the person you truly are. The path is almost always circuitous, and I think there’s a reason for that, for life to be built around trial and error. We are shaped and created by our trials.”
4.5 stars. **Thriller/suspense fans I would say this is more of a slow-burning character study.
