Description: A rebellious teenage girl, Stella, is accused of murdering an older, successful businessman. Stella’s father, a pastor, and mother, a lawyer, find themselves testing their own morals as they determine how far they will go to defend and protect their only daughter. The story is told in three parts from each family member’s perspective.
What I Liked: This book was unlike any other psychological thriller I’ve read. Each member of the family has their own perspective and account of past events that has lead the family to where they are now. I was constantly questioning each narrator’s perspective and motives. I was pleased that I did not predict the ending.
What I Didn’t Like: There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like. It was a long book for a psychological legal thriller, but the chapters were mostly less than five pages, so reading flew by quickly! I would sometimes get impatient when a chapter told in the present day ended with a cliffhanger, only to find the next chapter was a flashback to a past event. The book really did flow well though, and I adjusted to the pacing pretty quickly.
Final Thoughts: If you enjoy character driven books, you will devour A Nearly Normal Family. Everytime I thought I knew what was going on, I would flip to the next chapter and make a new discovery that changed my view! I devoured this book in two or three days and gave it five stars.
