The novel starts with the perspective of Stella's heartbroken father, a pastor. It's obvious that he's tempted to hold some things back in order to protect his daughter, who he clearly adores. However, in his description of the days before Stella's arrest, some red flags about her behavior crop up. I want to know what she's done, and what the rest of the family thinks, and how reliable his narration truly is.
