This first look was absolutely compelling me to want to continue to read! The chapters provided were told only from the viewpoint of the father, Pastor Adam Sandell. I really want to read the viewpoints of the mom, Ulricka, who is a criminal defense attorney and seems to have a closer relationship with her daughter than Adam does. Further, I want to read what Stella, the accused daughter, has to say about herself. The secrecy that the father portrays in this first look is mysteriously enticing. Stella comes in late, puts her clothes into the wash and takes a shower. Then, she is accused of killing a man on the night that she came in late. Since her father has no idea where she was and what she was doing, he is filled with the fear that any parent would have about the whereabouts of their child. I loved the short chapters and the way the story was narrated to fill in all of the missing details about Stella. We know that she is eighteen, that she was the product of an unplanned pregnancy and that she has no real goals for her life. All of this from the father’s meanderings through his mind. This is a fascinating way to present a book and I hope to be chosen to read and review the whole thing because the story of Stella is definitely calling to me!
