This one had me at first sight, I really love the colorful and magical cover. Glad to report that there’s a good book here, with an impressive writing style. High in clarity but authentically descriptive and full of feels-like-I’m-there beautiful flourishes and details, both earthly and fantastical. The approach to fantasy is a bit more down-to-earth with a touch of magic. Though I’ve some familiarity with the cultural aspects, I do think the story unveils in an approachable way that can appeal to a broader audience- both YA fans and adult fans of YA would enjoy this one, I think. The vivid vocabulary and fresh concept make this book stand out across genres.

As someone increasingly interested in tea, I was pleased to find all the little details of tea making established here in an artsy but also magical way. There are even some educational moments about brewing and ingredients, though it doesn’t get too muddled in details.

The plot is exciting and eventful, there is a sense of urgency right out of the gate. It’s great to read from the perspective of a brave and driven heroine. Her family dynamics are complex and some side characters are varied and interesting but one big thing I would change is the glossary. There’s a wonderful glossary in the back of the book, brief and helpful, but I wish there were also descriptions of the characters. Sometimes I would forget who is who and the names can be hard to remember if I took a break in between reading sessions.

In closing, I’m excited about the sequel and look forward to reading more from this author. Do be aware though that the sequel seems like a required reading to be fully satisfied with the overall story.
