A Magic Steeped in Poison follows Ning on her action-packed quest to save her younger sister from the poison that is slowly killing her. Ning faces lots of trials and makes new friends, enemies, and discoveries about herself along the way.

The writing is beautiful, the story is gripping, and the characters are engaging. Even though the book is under 400 pages, a lot takes place, and it's a wild ride. Ning is a great protagonist and honestly kind of a legend. The magic system in this story is really interesting and it was a delight to be so immersed in Chinese culture. The characters feel relatable and real. There's political intrigue and it doesn't pull any punches. This is the kind of story that might kill off a favorite character. Only book two will tell. I can't wait to finish this duology in August!

I would recommend this novel to all lovers of YA Fantasy and Chinese mythology. It's also got some excellent political unrest, adventure, and magic. I'm really happy I had the opportunity to read it.
