The magic system of this book is so unique and creative, I love how the author combines traditional medicines and magic. The writing is so detailed and descriptive with so much incredible world building and complex characters. It’s exactly what I look for in a fantasy book, I was hooked from the very beginning and immediately felt a connection to Ning, and her desire to help her sister.
It did an amazing job of keeping my interest in the story and the characters. The tension and political intrigue of the imperial court along with the challenging trials was very interesting and helped move the story along. Overall I really enjoyed this book and thought the writing was very well done. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys authors like Leigh Bardugo and Adrienne Young. I can’t wait for Judy I. Lin to release the sequel which from the description looks to be just as good as the first!
