From the very start, A Good Marriage got my attention with excellent character development of Lizzie Kizakis, as she faced a long night at work, prior to a phone call from Zack, a man she knew from Penn Law School, who she had not spoken with in a very long time. Lizzie is an employee of Young & Crane, where she had only been employed for 4 months, switching into a career working with white collar crime. She has been married to her husband Sam for eight years and she was lamenting another late night where she could not get home to him. However, Zach's call derailed this plan, as he asked her to come see him at Riker's where he was currently in jail. He wants Lizzie to represent him, and she does not want to get wrapped up in his drama, nor is she appropriate to represent a man who is likely about the get charged with murder, but off she goes anyway, thinking if nothing else she will get home to her spouse sooner. We also meet Amanda, Zach's lovely bride, who is introduced to us prior to her murder. She runs Hope First, which is her husband's brainchild, and a foundation for middle school students to be able to go to top rate schools in New York who would otherwise not be able to afford it. In the chapter where we meet Amanda she receives a phone call with just heavy breathing - something she has clearly been happening for a while, and which for some reason causes her a lot of upset.
Both women are likeable characters and within just the first two chapters, Kimberly McCreight leaves a number of questions in the mind of this reader.... what is behind these calls Amanda was getting and did Zach kill her? If he didn't who did and will Lizzie be successful in NOT taking his case, as she seems to feel some sense of obligation to his, as a prior classmate of her. What will happen? This writer very much wants to know.... This is a book that is right up my alley, that has already grabbed my interest in just a few pages.
