A bit disappointing, although enjoyed the Big Little Lies vibes

I was really excited going into this book because I love courtroom thrillers. Any courtroom scene, with the back and forth, the uncertainty, the surprise reveals, is always so exciting to me.

This book follows Lizzie, a high-powered attorney who is asked by her old friend from college to defend him in anticipation of being charged for his wife Amanda’s murder. We also get to read from Amanda’s perspective in flashbacks leading up to the day of her death. I think this was a good way to structure the story, and I surprisingly enjoyed Amanda’s perspective more than Lizzie’s. Her chapters almost reminded me of Big Little Lies.

However, this ultimately didn’t work for me. The story didn’t keep me engaged, and I felt Lizzie’s perspective to be a bit boring. I also didn’t form connections with the characters. My biggest disappointment, however, was the ending. This may be a bit of a spoiler!! But, the ending of this book did something that many thrillers of the last few years have done and I think it’s problematic and cheap. So, this was a bit disappointing for me.
