A Clash of Steel is the story of Xiang, a girl from a small village, who has always yearned for adventures on the sea. Through some twists and turns, she gets to meet some incredible people, learn how to sail, have real life adventures, and discover the true meanings of love, belonging, family, friendship, and treasure.
The writing in this novel is excellent. It was so easy to just sit and devour the pages. The female protagonists are all strong, capable women who make smart decisions and fight for what they believe in. The romance at the heart of this story is also so sweet and worthwhile. This is definitely an adventure read like the original Treasure Island, but it focuses much more on the lessons learned on these adventures, then just the adventures themselves. Most of the story actually takes place before they get to the island, which makes sense considering the amount of time and travel it entails to get there. However, I could see this reading as slow for some people. I really did enjoy the pacing and the time that was taken to build these characters. I loved getting to know them all, and I can't help but think that Treasure Island was definitely updated and improved upon in this remix.
