Lots of family and lots of love.
I don't really read YA anymore, but I love a story that deals with a different culture than mine. I am part Mexican, and I find that Asian stories are similar to mine, so I tend to really enjoy them. I also come from a complicated/unknown family history, so I really related to Vivi and her wanting to know more about her maternal family and where they come from. Vivi and Lan are so likeable and realistic. And their love story is very beautiful. They are fully accepting of each other and want to help each other. Trinity did a wonderful job describing Sài Gòn and all the food. You can't help but feel like you are actually there with them. This book is on the shorter end, and it ends nicely, but I felt like there could have been an epilogue to kind of expand on where the two ended up. It was a great read and brought tears to my eyes at the ending. It was beautiful.
